How to apply for a place at The Carlton Academy - Admissions Policy

A copy of our Admissions Policy is found in the policies section of our website.

The Carlton Academy has its own admissions authority. If you are looking to secure a place at our school for children in Year 6 and due to start in Year 7 the following September then you need to apply through the traditional Local Authority application process - you can find more information and do this online from here. Nottingham City Council residents apply directly to the City Council.

How to Appeal a school place for Year 6 in September 2024

If you have been unsuccessful in being offered a place at The Carlton Academy on 1 March 2024 (National Offer Day), you have the right to appeal against this decision to an independent appeals panel.

How to lodge an appeal

  1. Download the Notice to Appeal pack from here.
  2. You should include any information and/or documentation that you wish to submit in support of your case, including proof of permanent residency for your child at the above address. You may submit additional information any time up to the hearing but, if you provide anything too close to the hearing date which the panel thinks may be significant, the panel may need to adjourn to allow all parties the opportunity to consider it.
  3. Ensure you have read our Admissions Policy, which includes our over-subscription criteria.

Please send your completed appeal pack and all documentation to our Admissions Officer, by emailing Tamzin Mistry t.mistry@theacademycarlton.org

You will need to return your completed Notice of Appeal by 29 March.  You should receive an acknowledgement within 5 school days.

What happens at the appeal hearing?

For applications made as part of the normal admissions round, our appeals will be held in two stages:

Stage 1

Academy’s case

All parents who have lodged an appeal will be invited to attend Stage 1 of the appeal hearings on Thursday 23 May 2024.  The meeting will either take place at 9am at The Carlton Academy or be online. This will allow the school to present its case and to take questions based on its case from both parents and the independent appeals panel.

Provided the independent appeals panel is satisfied that prejudice has been proven, your individual appeal will then take place as follows:

Stage 2

Parent’s case

Parents will be notified of an individual time for their individual appeal no less than 10 days before the hearing. Individual appeal hearings will take place throughout the day on Thursday 23 and, if needed, Friday 24 May 2024 either in school or on line.

Parents will be notified in writing of the outcome of their appeal by Friday 31 May 2024.
